Recently we celebrated my husband and mothers birthdays. As it was a busy weekend there was no time for baking a cake from scratch so I headed to Coles for a few small essentials and hacked a cake by decorating it, which took no longer than 10 minutes (minus the time waiting for the chocolate to chill).
Ingredients required:
1 x packet of white chocolate buds
3 x large purple cabbage leaves (often these leaves can be found at the bottom of the box of cabbages)
1 x cake topper (optional)
1 x cake stand (optional)
Steps to make the cabbage leaf fans
Step 1
Give the cabbage leaves a hand wash with some dishwashing detergent. Once they are clean pop them in the fridge to chill.
Step 2
Place the white chocolate buds in a glass bowl over the top of a saucepan to melt.. Continuously stir and it really should only take a couple of minutes for the chocolate to melt.
Step 3
With a spoon scoop some of the white chocolate into each cabbage leaf. The more of the cabbage you cover the bigger the chocolate fan will be.
Once each leaf is covered place them laying flat in the fridge to chill for at least 45mins.
Step 4
Take the cabbage leaves from the fridge checking they have completely hardened. Gently peel each leaf off away from the white chocolate.
Step 5
Carefully take the leaves and gently stab them directly into the top of the cake so as they will stand up on their own.
Step 6
If you decide to add a cake topper as extra decoration this is also the time to add it. I was concerned the white chocolate leaves would melt if left for too long however they stood up on my cake and didn't melt. If you were to decorate the cake the night before your occasion I don't think you should have any problem with the cake happily sitting in pretty until it is required.
Now it's time to sing happy birthday and enjoy your cake! x
